can someone explain the engine codes to me?

ok, I have to admit I have no idea what's going on with all these engine codes....

AUD, AEX, etc etc

why are there so many different codes for essentially the same engine? or are they codes for different engines (eg spi, mpi, etc) what did they change and why? are some engines better than others with the same hp output?

sorry, I've always been confused by this!

any pointers appreciated in my quest for more polo knowledge

I just had a look at the FAQ xls sheet and it appears some have different bores and strokes, but what else changed?

not a great deal i think, just helps them identify what year the engine was made, or if a revision was made to a major component...
