Full size pics on request. They're a bit blurry but it's hard to get a steady picture when it's dark (need practice).

Yup, I'm up for a proper meet somewhere soon. Lutterworth/Notts? As Tahrey says... there's a few good palces to drive in Lutterworth and it's the easiest place in the world to find.

Its a tripod you need not practice ;) Its extremely hard to take non blurry pics without one at night with the flash off.

A cam that can do a high ISO setting (sacrifice some image quality for increased brightness) and manual exposure control is a plus, and you may as well use the flash unless it would really ruin things (use slow synchro mode and a steady hand if its making eg plates wash out)

make it take a slightly dark picture if you have to, then brighten it on the PC later

as for a tripod, just go down to jessops or somewhere like that and get a simple mini-tripod with the bendy legs on (look like thin shower hoses). Very adaptable to anywhere you want to put it. Just screws into that mysterious hole on the bottom of the camera. Has fit all three of my digicams so far (lifesaver on the uni project - thousands of non-flash indoors macro focus pictures of leaves..), and a couple that aren't mine.
(not sure if it could effectively take the weight of a big Nikon like that though!)

alternatively rest it on nearby walls / posts / cars / sleeping drunks to make-do

(i have to remember to test a theory that using a lower resolution can improve your night-shot capabilities too - certainly helps when touching up naff night shots on the PC - trick i've picked up from working in medical imaging... can't get enough dynamic range on an isotope scan? halve the rez to get four times as many rays in each pixel..)
