What can I do to my expectant 9N on performance?

I did not know if I should post this here or somewhere else, sorry if I posted wrong.

Well… as the title suggest I am looking at some performance mods to my expectant 9N.

I am currently considering the 1.4 16v and 1.4 FSI, I am leaning more towards the FSI as it is quicker and more economical according to the brochure but I am just looking for info on what engine is best.

I am not going to be ordering my car for a bit as I am waiting for my bonus to come threw lol.

When I get the car I seriously want to look at some performance mods, I do not want to spend to much but I have been looking at some ECU mod chips but I am unsure what chip is best for performance.

Also, what other performance encashment can I do to the car?

When I order the car, should I look at the stock VW sports suspension, is it much lower harder etc?

I have the 1.4 16v 75hp petrol.

I wish I had something faster, and certainly something with more torque (like a diesel!!).

Petrifed has the FSI engine, he could perhaps provide some thoughts on it.

I also have the VW sports suspension option fitted. I pretty sure it's the same as the sports suspension on the FSI.

I tested cars with and without this, and strongly advise you to get it!! It, of course, reduces body roll (a lot!!), but the main advantage is it gets rid of the "dead spot" around the central steering position that the cars without it seem to have. I think it also gives you a small (i.e. c. 20mm) drop (I still have to park next to standard car to confirm this)

However, it is hard (good, in my book - at least you and your passengers know you've got it) - but it isn't very "composed". My car, at least, "skittles" about over uneven B-roads, although after 5000 miles it's starting to bed in, and this is getting less noticable.

Personally, I'd say go for an FSI or a diesel, or wait for the GTI!!

I don't much knowledge of performance mods, but I have seen a front struct brace on polo9n and air filters must be available by now. There's a sports exhaust you can get from VW, but I think it would be more for noise / looks than reducing back pressure.

Maybe someone else on here knows more...

Well I have to say from recent experience, that if you want the perfect blend of amazing fuel economy and performance, then opt for the 1.4 TDI, or better still test drive them all and see what YOU think.

The TDI does surprise a lot of people, and if you want bigger performance still then the 1.9 is a :twisted: in disguise. Especially when it can be chipped to 130bhp I have been told.

If performance is what you’re after, then obviously the bigger the car you start with the bigger results you will get

I have the FSI and it is pretty good on petrol, getting up to 50 mpg.
But you really have to drive like an old man to get the results.

If you drive quite fast then you will notice no difference from the other petrol engines, it may even be less economical. But it is quick, noticably over the 1.4 75 bhp.

I've test driven

1.4 75
1.4 100
1.4 FSI 86
1.9 TDI

Personally I couldn't see that much difference between the 1.4 100 and the FSI 86. But there is a world of difference between the 1.4 100 and the TDI 100.

If I could afford it I would have got the 1.9 TDI. It really is worth the extra ££££'s and as you say you can chip them to 130 bhp, who needs the gti??? Unless you can wait for it.

I cant really comment on the 1.4 TDI. I'd imagine it's faster than the 1.4 75.

I am afraid that I am very anti diesel, I have driven a few and I am not keen on the characteristics of diesel engines.

As most people know the overall cost of diesel cars can be more, they can be more expensive to service there depressions is more and price of diesel is more, so for me I would rather go for a petrol car and drive in a little bit more silence and be more in pocket after 5 years or so.

I have heard that the VW diesels are some of the best in the world, so I may have to ask my dealer for a test drive.

I've just switched to my first diesel - the 1.9 TDi Sport.

Whilst you're right that generally the new car cost of a diesel is higher, the depreciation is actually lower and I stand to do much better with my finance package after 3 years with my TDi. Servicing costs should also be better because many are on the new variable service interval which will bring the car in when it needs to rather than at fixed intervals. Over at tdiclub.com there are plenty of folk who are only needing to service every 17k miles or so! Yes, diesel is 1p a litre more, but I'm getting 440 miles from a £29 fill (50 to the gallon) so that more than makes up for it. Couple this with a insurance figure which was 2/3 what I was paying before and the diesel has been well worth it. Yes, they're a little more noisy, but mainly when cold and idling - out on the road, you'd really never know, and if you do wind the windows down, you get to hear that wonderful turbo spin :wink:

Take one out for a test drive, you might be as suprised as I was :D I can't see myself ever going back to petrol.

Mine is a 1.4 100ps MT , and i've tried the 1.4 75ps both MT & AT

the 100ps really gives the different when going over 4000rpm, but under 2500 rpm, it is similar w/ the 75ps MT, especially when going up hill.... :lol:

and forget about the AT...... :x
