Accelerator

My girlfriends 96 1.6 GL Polo has a slight problem with the accelerator pedal. When you put your foot down to accelerate the first cm of movement on the pedal has no power, it feels as if the pedal is loose, as once you go past that it works perfectly. It is not causing much of a problem but would be nice to fix. Does anyone have any idea of what may be causing this or any suggestions on how to fix it?

mine does that too!
Not sure what is causing it though.
