Gearbox - mk4?

Gearbox - mk4?
Would a mk4 gearbox fit a mk2? I know early mk4's shared some of the old engines, just wondering if this also applied to gearboxes and if so whether late mk4's also would have the same gearbox type. Seems a bit random I know, but there's a 1998 1.0 engine and gearbox for sale on ebay for a quid, with 60,000 miles on it.. and I really need a new box.

I've asked him for the part number and whether it's a rod or cable change, hopefully he'll get back to me soon. Am I right in thinking that all boxes with an 085 part number share the same housing.. and hence would be a more or less straight swap? Speedo drive shouldn't be a problem, just bolt my current one in its place, I presume the mk4 has an electronic sender instead of the mechanical one. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Another thought.. any reason why the 999cc motor shouldn't fit in the mk2 if I use my current mounts? Seeing as it was a replacement for the 1043cc motor from the early mk4, which in turn was the same block as all the previous 1043's... or is this wishful thinking?

then again - mounting points in mk4 may be different to mk3/mk2 and so had altered mounts to make the old engines fit - then when the new ones come along an entirely different mount is used to fit it in, with neither part being compatible to the older cars.
like starting with a green broom and a plastic handle that only fits greens, swapping for a metal handle that fits red and green, and putting a red head on.... you wont be able to put the red head on the plastic handle
ps if that sort of thing is going on i really need to watch ebay more closely

Well, if the gearbox fits then I'll buy the lot for the box, and if the engine fits too then bonus, 5bhp more, smoother, quieter, half the mileage, more economical and a reduction in capacity so insurance won't have a heart attack 
Anyone know roughly what the ratios are like on a mk4 1.0 box? I'm guessing less insanely low than the mk2 1.05 box but not quite as tall as the 4+e..

I doubt youll be able to use the engine TBH, the front engine mount will be different and most likely not backwards compatible. Also youll still need to use your carb, which wont fit the manifold of the mk4 engine. Also the mk2 manifold wont fit the mk4 engine. So youre screwed basically (just use the box assuming you can)

i really really dont want to further rain on your parade, but if im to assume gran turismo hasn't lied to me*, the ratios may well be exactly the same as what you've got now.
that, or the same plus a distinctly taller final drive (like about 3.78 or the like, to suit the lower revving engine) ... i really dont know either, but it would probably pay off to get the hard data on it first

Well, unfortunately my parade has just had the heavens open on it, looks like it's a cable change box rather than rod change. So, short of someone telling me a good DIY method of fitting cable change, I think that idea's out the window 
Still, if someone needs a good 999cc mk4 engine and box, I think it's still going for a quid on ebay..
