Right, seen some nice 14's on ebay, but they look stupid with MAHOOSIVE tyres. Am I right in saying that you can get low profile tyres for any wheels?

185/50/14 for the polo although some guys use 195/45/14 but i think the speedo reads slightly under with these.

While on the subject, how wide cood i go on a set of 14"s? Got my eye on a set but they range from 7-9" wide.

Also who can xplain offsets 2 me? Ive no idea!

Right - ET (or Offset)

What is it!!!!!

Its the measurement from the centre line between the two rim edges to the hub mounting face

Inner Rim > I.......................I < Outer Rim

Centre line > .........!
hub mounting face > I

ET = This Dimens'n > <

So ET 0

Inner Rim > I.......................I < Outer Rim

Centre line >..........!
hub mount'g face >I

ET = 0 Dimension ><

So ET 30

Inner Rim > I.......................I < Outer Rim

Centre line > ..........!
hub mounting face ......>I

ET = 30 Dimension >30mm<

Right so higher the ET (compared to OE dimension) the more the inner edge of the rim is gonna get close to your springs, struts, roll bar, steering arms, wishbones, arch liners etc etc

Best way to check is to look at how much clearance you have now at straight ahead and full lock either way then take the difference between the std ET and the new ET and see if you go negative - cos thats bad!!!

Oh and if you are going to go up on rim width it's very important that you check the clearances before purchase

WHY?

Cos a 7 inch rim with an offset the same as a 6 inch rim will eat half an inch of you clearance on the inside edge and half an inch on the outside edge

Nope - if it's 30 offset it's 30mm from the hub mounting face to the centre line of the rim

example (with easy numbers)

ie inner rim to outer rim = 200mm (roughly a 7.5 J rim)

Offset = 30

So centre line would be at 100mm from inner rim and 100mm from outer rim therefore the hub mounting face would be 30mm from that

130mm from the inner rim edge

70mm from the outer rim edge.
