Rear Shocks
Rear Shocks
i took the polo for its MOT and it passed apart from the r/driver side
(Shock)is leaking. ECp price £49 Inc vat Per pair. Jus wondered how easy they are to change, does the springs have to come out aswel or can it be done without removing them. My mechanic said he'll do it for £100 (Parts inc).

dont forget to put the brushes back on the new shocks.
dependant on how old the car is it may be a good idea to change the rubber brushes on the top of the suspention when you do it as they start to ware out after a while. so if its done over abotu 60k miles id replace the brushes. when i did my sus i replaced the front brushes and my cars only done 35k but its better safe than sorry.
how mechanicly minded are you as i can help you change it if you want as im only in solihull. im leaving for worcester tonight and i will be back next week depending on when your mot runs out i can help or not.
tools needed ( from off the top of my head.)
penetrating oil and lots of it ( i used a whole can of WD40 to do all 4 corners)
a small spanner ( dont know what size i used an ajustable)
17mm ofset ring spanner
and i think it was 18mm for the botom of the shocks
this is what i did. put in first gear
slacken wheel bolts.
raise the rear of the car and put on axel stands.
remove wheels
soak the bolts holding the sus to the rear beam.
inside the car.
fold down rear seats. remove trim panels ( torx screwdriver required)
pop off the topmount cover.
put ring spanner over nut and hold the small rod still with small spanner( 3-4mm spanner)
theres a nut washer then another nut above the brushes. undo all of those but when undoing the last one holding the rubber brush on you need to support the rear beam as it drops. so use a trolly jack under the brake drum. and then remove top mount slowley lower the rear beam down. now your left with the bottom bolt. by now the penatrating lube will ahev worked and it should just undo with no effort. it will be abit tight but nothing you cant handle.
so the legs off now.
you will want to use a pair of spring compressors to compress the spring so you can remove the lower brush. * this is just a matter of undoing another 17mm nut. and sloting it off.
now to re asemble the new leg. slot the spring on slide the metal centering plate on. ( any new nuts that come with the leg use them instead of the old one. you shoudl get 2 and you need 3 the 3rd one you can use an old nut for) slide the rubber brushings on and screw the nuts in. so now you can uncompress the spring ensuring it is seated both top and bottom as it tesions.
then all you have to do is refit the new leg. easy as pie really.
you can do a whole car in 4 hours if the springs play nice.
* note about spring compressors.
use them on opposite sides of the spring
tention them evenly and equally
point the open end of the shock away from yourself animals and walls. if the spring compressors slip somehow( everythings likely) theres enough energy in a compressed spring to kill a dog and put a huge dent in the side of your car.)
