Poorly Polo :(

Post by JWC »

My Polo is a bit poorly, but been like that for a while, its sort of like back ache, no real problems but I would like to fix it.

You may remember a while back I posted a mesage about compression testing and my breather flinging oil into the air filter? I took it to VW and they said it was ok, wasn't really convinced.

Well just recently, the plot thickened. I kept getting the ECP light coming on and then going off again. Just the other day I caught the bugger, when I happened to have my VAGCOM in the car with my laptop - was filming a documentary for BBC2 (tell you later). Again the fault code came up as implausible signal from the MAP (thrust sensor). So I took her to bits and had a poke around for vacuum leaks, nothing obvious and left it till this weekend for a proper look. I took off the MAP sensor and its caked it crappy oil crap. Which I dissolved off with petrol and WD40. Checked with the VAGCOM scope again, 300mbar at idle 900 at WOT, wibbles about in between, - so looks ok now.

But why oily? Lookes again at my breather issue, I have fitted an extra oil seperator to control the gasses but still oily. Did another compression test and compression ok still. so not large amouts of blow-by and the engine only done 40k.

Took off the breather tube while engine running, fine grey smoke coming out of it at idle. This does sound like combustion gas? The gasses have been hot and have scorched the breather, as far as I can determine this problem has been evident all the time I have had the car from 27,000 miles. The exhaust emissions are ok, it has some but not massive oil consumption.

I'm wondering if there is a fault with the gasket seating or that the exhaust valve stem seals may not be sealing?

I will pay VW a little visit, even though my warranty is out and lean on them quite heavily.

Anyone got any ideas, or am I being daft? They all pump this much crap up the breather.

Been to VW today, spoke with one of the engineers, and he says they are a bit like that. anyway, we trawled the car park and found another with the same engine code. It didn't smoke straight off, but after a while it was the same, so I am not as worried now, it really is just a crap design. All I can say is that you really need to change the oil regularly. Like every 6 months, if there is that much combustion gasses getting in.
