What sort of basic tools should you keep in your car? perhaps this could be made into a sticky topic??
Cheers.
tool kit
I carry.
Jack, wheel brace, cheap screwdriver with interchangable ends and 1/4" sockets (cost about £3), pair of combination pliers, spare bulbs, fuses, first aid kit, knife and a torch.
Everything apart from the jack and brace go in a wrap that I just take in whatever vehicle I'm driving, including the works van where you need a 13mm socket to get the toolkit out.
I also have a set of allen keys in the set for breaking in when I lock my keys in the back of the van. Probably handy on VW's, but I've never used them for anything other than gaining entry
Also always have my mobile, and a £10 voucher next to my AA card in my wallet.

I don't have any tools in the car, except the standard things you get in the boot plus my wheel locking bolt plug.
I'm missing the first-aid kit too.
I reckon the most import things would be a blanket, my mobile, and my RAC card. If I break down, I want to be warm and want to get back somewhere safe, not work on my polo there and then. Tools are heavy and take up space.
I'm sure I'll regret writing this the first time I break down.
I guess some bulbs, fuses and a first-aid kit would be handy.
