4+E??

Post by minis84 »

Hey

Was down the local scrappers earlier on and there's about 10 Mk2 Polo's in there (and 3 or 4 Mk3's too).

One of the Mk2's had not long arrived, had a twin headlamp grille, and really nice interior, and when I looked inside, had a gearstick with an 'E' in the place of 5th. Am I right in thinking this is a rare gearbox? I could probably pick the whole car up for roughly £50, would it be worth getting it to strip for spares?

Cheers

Tom

That's pretty much the standard 5 speed, the economy box.. the close range ones are rarer (and pretty useless too..).
It's worth getting the box if it's low mileage and you only have a 4 speed, it basically keeps the same ratios as the 4 speed box plus an 'overdrive' 5th for cruising. Much nicer on the motorways.

and once you've secured what you want, let the rest of us know the name/address so we can go root around!

for one, it sounds like a nottingham college lunchtime excursion..

i'm going to leave it to be honest, I've got enough Mini bits without bringing a Polo home to strip too, don't think the relatives would appreciate it!

If anyone else is interested (its a good scrappers), its called Albert Looms, and its about 10 mins from J25 of the M1, just off the A52 as you head into Derby.

:D last time I was there I managed to get 2 screw in towing eyes, and a complete tool kit/jack out of a Mark 3, as it was missing from my GT.

At the moment I think there's 3 Mark 3 Coupe's, a couple of Mark 3 Squarebacks, and at least 5 Mark 2's. There was also an extremely rusty Mark 1 saloon a while back which I nabbed a pic of (but can't find at the moment!), which was crushed pretty much straight away.

I'm lucky too, I live bang on the other side of the roundabout to it, about 2 minutes walk, so if I hear of something interesting (1275 Metro's are always good to hear about, the engines go great in Mini's!), then its straight down there...

wonder how much they'd want for it, though? and whether they have any kind of refund policy if it turns out to be knackered...

PS do they have any astras in, or are they a VW-only concern? I think i fixed my mirror, but it may yet completley fall apart (looked a bit shagged when i got up close whilst glueing it back together), and there's no way im paying dealer price for a brand new part - that comes unpainted!
(plus the lower front bumper + splitter is all cracked and falling off)

sorry about the delay....

Tahrey, they do all sorts, and there's plenty of Mk3 Hastra's in.

k4lps, its about 2 miles from the city centre, up the A52 towards the M1, off just after the Wyvern, onto Asda roundabout, follow it round, its bang next door to B&Q - alternatively follow the beaten up Festa's, Carina's, Chavalier's etc that converge there every day :D

Good to hear, minis ... last week i couldnt make it because of a MAHOOZIVE work splurge that carried on through college and into the weekend (urgh!), which is why i didnt get the hubnut off til sunday

i've found the roads in question, but any other road names/numbers/map-findable landmarks etc that would be good for a non-derby native?
EDIT: autorouting your instructions, is it in the same place the holiday inn is? (like the way that all the big out-of-town stores are clustered about the notts travelodge?)

and how many minutes from notts might we be looking at? :D
(long since learned not to estimate journey time from a map or the distance - for the record it looks about 12 miles each way on this one)

ok, type in my postcode (DE21 7NA). It will take you down the A52 and onto a roundabout about 3 miles before Derby. It will be signposted Spondon, Chaddesden and Borrowash.

Go onto the roundabout and Looms's is the second exit, the same one as B&Q, the exit before you go back onto the A52 in the same direction you were going when you exited (if that makes sense?!).

Then to go back onto the '52, come out of Looms's, go under the bridge around the roundabout, past Spondon carpets (and Merchant Avenue, my street!), up the slip road and bear right onto the A52, signposted Nottingham, M1 etc.

If you're coming from Clifton, the best route is probably down the A453, onto the M1 n/b at J24, up to J25 and onto the A52. I'd estimate 20-25mins at 60-70mph. You can also go onto Notts ring road, and past the QMC, head onto the A52 that way......but the routes are probably about the same to be honest.

Hope that helps!

cheers! if i hustle i'll probably only be my usual "little bit late" getting into the first afternoon class..... if they have anything in of course ;)
(we get 45 minutes for lunch, bit poor)

got myself a nice big wooden trunk (well, plywood, but metal joinery) pre-filled with polystyrene wotsits and bubble wrap today ... some delivery guy left it at work after we'd taken out whatever bit of delicate, heavy kit was inside and his company have made it obvious by their lack of respose to our inquiry that they dont care about it .... score! :D

lucky i drove in thanks to train troubles

just wonder how much they'll charge up'n'over the private sellers
