Side effects of fitting coilovers..

Post by Roper »

Hi All :D

I have recently fitted FK Highsport Coilovers but something is wrong. Each time i turn the wheels (especially when stopped, turning round etc) i get a pinging noise from one side. I really cant work out what this could be, and think the whole shock could be moving, and the spring is pinging somehow..? :? :?

the camber of the two front wheels looks quite a bit out to the eye so needs setting up (and tyres are good), but the side thats got the worst camber isn't making the pinging noise

Any ideas? :!: :?:

Thanks in advance peeps

it's the same on mine mate! unless you strip them apart every two months or so and fill the top spring covers with grease you will never stop it, its just the spring turning. don't worry about it! i was shiting myself when i put mine on.

you guys seriously just learnt to ingore it?  It must be worse on mine cos it over rules the music at times! but i only seem to get it on one side... its not something I've just been able to blank out so far  8) but havent had the camber/alignment set up properly yet tho..

Are there any aftermarket "top spring covers" to eliminate this, i think me and my girl would feel better after if i could stop it, she'd want to be pushed that lil bit harder then!

but if nothing works i should just buy a louder stereo then :? :P

Maybe a long shot this, but when i changed my front suspension briefly, i had a knocking problem.

Turned out that i had not tightened a nut properly. If you look in your engine bay, where the suspenion pokes through the chassis, there should be a nut on the thread. Make sure you tighten that up fully.

I think you need a 22m deep socket for the job.

yup get this aswell, its not surprising considering how much crap gets trapped in-between the coils.

I am still having problems with setting these up correctly, and its eating front tyres. Does anyone have the camber setting that it needs to be set at? The VW garage said they cant set it up without it but i haven't a clue! is that not similar to tracking  and does it cost alot to get done?

cheers all :D

Only a few garages can actually do both camber and tracking! You just need to ring around.

As for it costing £800, thats utter bull shit. Cost me £40 first time i had it done. Need to arrange to have mine re-done though, just had my new ones fitted.
