Maybe to do something like the Volvo system: when you turn on your lights, those little lights on the sides turn on too.

if they are reflective markers, then it's been done to look like a US-spec Polo (although there never was such a thing) - cars in the US must have these reflective markers at both front corners of the car and some UK cars have them - I think the Jaguar S-type is one that has got them fitted as standard even though it's a UK model? For example:

Chrysler 300C:

Jaguar S-Type:
Image

Look carefully at the front bumpers too see the markers in question. On the other hand, maybe they're badges of some kind after all...
