Handbrake on = Brake lights on?

Post by inder »

Very quick question... when you put your handbrake on, are the brake lights supposed to come on, so people behind you know your handbrake is on and your stationary?

:?

Nope. I don't think any car is wired up that way? Mine certainly isn't!

That wouldn't be a good idea

IIRC the brake lights work even when the engine is off and the keys out of the ignition

Park up apply hand brake and walk away with 50W gleaming away at teh rear of the car - come back 1 hr later and car needs a bump start!!!

Okay good, cleared that up, I thought for some reason it did, when my lights were on at night

I guess all those stationary on a hill etc.. have their foot on the brake

Thanks

bit of a thread hijack, but my third brake light glows when I've got the ignition on, so at night it looks like another sidelight! hmmm..

Yup, lazy drivers :) as if you're in a queue of traffic or stopped at the lights or such like, and are going to be there for a few seconds/minutes (ie. not just a quick pause before moving off again) then you should really apply the handbrake and take your foot off the brake pedal, thereby not infuriating the driver behind you by burning the pattern of your high-level brake-light LEDs into his retinas

Yeah I get a little mad at that...
