Polo Mint, anybody?

Post by MisterMinty »

Well, what else was I going to call a white Polo?
Here are a few pics of my fun-on-four-wheels. Its a 16V 100BHP machine, with the Spa alloy wheels and standard coils/shocks.

Here's a close up of the Powerflow exhaust system I mentioned:

...but under the bonnet things aren't EXACTLY "factory-fitted" anymore...

There - I managed to get them taken before I got into work! Devoted or what?

Now that depends where you drive it LOL! When it's dry, no problem. When its wet...and bearing in mind that North Bucks is a fairly rural place....mud....let us say I own a pressure washer and use it frequently! :P

The exhaust is a Powerflow system. You have them bespoke made, so you can have pretty much any toy in the box, money (and space) allowing. This system uses 45mm pipe, welded from the catalyst back. Its got a slim damper (little flow resistance but helps with noise), then a simiar back-box to the standard fit. BUT - it sounds WAY WAY better. PLUS - you can choose the tailpipe to fit...I went for the subtle "slash" 2.5inch pipe you see. Nice and subtle...but the pipe really helps the engine breathe better.
It's fully guaranteed for life...so I reckon its money well spent.
Put one on your GTi and you should be smiling too....

(and no, I'm NOT a Powerflow sales rep, before you ask! )

That is one clean Polo :) very nice. NOS, I bet that's fun when you're getting insurance quotes  but it looks cool!

I've only ever seen one other white 6n2 and that was a 1.0-litre in what looked to be pretty much poverty spec!

To answer both points - yes, they've actually cut a really neat oval out of the bumper where the pipe exits. It's a perfect match to the tailpipe, especially if you get a slash pipe like this. As an illustration of how much care they take, I originally chose the simple, straight cut pipe. I was sat in the waiting room when in comes the fitter. "Got a minute mate?" Sure...off we go into the workshop.
"Do you REALLY want this pipe? Only if you look at your rear bumper, a slash pipe will fit in with the profile and curev of your bumper much better."
I was bowled over! They actually wanted my car to look better than I planned it..and they were spot on right. Talk to them and they'll do a great job.
Price was £310, inc VAT, fully fitted and guaranteed...also as much coffee and as many cigarettes as you like! (yeah I know..filthy habit  )

Here's the website for Powerflow:

I had mine fitted at Top Gear in Aylesbury. A better outfit you'd be hard pushed to find. Can't recommend them highly enough.

It's when the extra 55BHP hits the wheels that things become fun...
its still being perfected regarding its set-up so I'll let you know how I get on. Oddly enough, getting fuel pressure high enough is the awkward thing...if anyone would like a "dos and don'ts" guide based on my continuing work, do say so.

THINKS - reckon I need better shocks, springs to handle to kick. Suggestions? Also, will be fitting EBC slotted/vented discs soon...if you're going to go quick, you need to stop quick as well....

only thing stopping me doing the exhaust thing is that i'd have to declare it to my insurance, and i'm with privilege, and they dont let you ahve mods until you're 25

That seems a bit mean of them, especially as you're in a GTi already. After all, its not as if you're stuffing a 1.8 turbo lump under the bonnet...though I've read about some total loony tunes that have done JUST THAT..not only to a Polo...to a Lupo
