If so, where - is it marked? What tool would be best to get it with, i'd prefer not to cut it at all, so is there anyway to leave the old pipe in place and just change the backbox itself?????????

Would like to change my standard backbox with a new non-rusted one... now I thought this would be a simple job, but as I understand, the exhaust is in one piece from the factory and you have to cut the pipe to change the backbox??

I would definatley recommend you find a place that does exhausts because the will whip it off and put yours on before you can even pour yourself a coffee. Its worth it for a few quid because its very awkward without the full car jack because you have to hang it down to cut it. You could try using a high kerb. When you use a trolley jack I don't recommend you get under the car. My local garage did it in about 4 minutes and it cost me a pint of beer.
Supply them with the VW part otherwise they will put a crappy brazilian one on. Then its just a case of fitting which is easy when you have the right tools, they have a tool that cuts the pipe in about 2 seconds flat.
Also they will dispose of your old pipe, as its a sod to get it in your wheely bin!

Bit of a bump to the topic
Exhaust backbox finally gave up the other day, think I scraped it on the very steep slope I had to drive up and down on to get to a shop, which made the rust around the pipe connecting to the box break away... so no hole in the silencer, instead the connecting pipe gives up lol
Ahh well, at least the new one will replace this section of rusted pipe as well.
Having it replaced tomorrow at great cost

Getting it done at the dealership for a rip-price
Then again, parts do cost £100 on their own (I need new back box, connecting clamp and rubber mounts)
so other cost is labour
some places will fit the lot for cheaper if you supply the parts, else you will get some cheap make fitted that probably won't last
