Has my Catalytic Converter gone bust?
Thanks for that. The price is reassuring but i think i'd be better off taking the car to a garage to find out exactly whats causing the problem as im rubbish with cars. This is of course my first car and opening the bonnet sounds rather daunting let alone piston holes or whatever they are. (I needed a friends assistance changing the air filter!)What you need to do is find out whats causing the burning oil first, or what the missfire is otherwise you'll just knacker the new cat

a garrage will shaft you in the ass for engine repairs especally if they need to take anything apart. i was lucky on my last car when the heag gasket went i got it done for half price as i got the car from the garrage i took it to.Mint wrote:Thanks for that. that should have cost £200 and £100 of that was labour (£25 head skim £7 new bolts £15 oil £16 coolant £30 new gasket £3 gasket sealer) the rest was labour. now that takes an hour max to rebuild but the head had to be sent off to be skimmed so it took longer. but the point is that they will charge you alot.
Argghh cars. Whish id spent more time looking at different Polos, but i saw the price tag of £1,150 and just bought it hoping for the best. The body-work was in pristine condition, except for a few rust spots under the wheel arches (which ive now found out is like cancer 
). The car seems to drive fine - there isn't any warning lights etc. and it accelerates, stops and starts fine and smoothly. It's just the startup smoke. After the mini service me and a friend gave it - consisting of an oil filter change, oil change ( fresh bottle of fully synthetic oil ) and a new air filter, the car start-up fumes cleared drastically, and the car seems to start first-time, everytime. My friend said the old oil we drained was like water and horrid. Now that the smoke has become alot more clearer, does this still mean i have problems, or is it natural to smoke on startup? Also, when i switch on the ignition, it has the following message on the mileage display "INSP- 02" or something like that, i've read that this means it needs a service with additional work. Is this VW's way of making money or does it genuinely need a service? I'm plannning on giving it a new rotor arm, distributor cap and set of spark plugs this weekend.
