Is there a fine or penalty? Was told there is but have sen sooooo many cars with gaps and spaces in ridiculous of places and is very hard to read!!!

Surprised they havent been done :?
60 pound fine and 3 points, for displaying an incorrectly number plate or failure to display any number plate. They had to add the 3 points, because if you took off your back plate, you could speed and it was better than a speeding fine, since you only paid the 60 quid, but the wised up to it.

If, however, the officer cannot be bothered with the paperwork (about 15 minutes worth) then you will get away with a caution - which means your car will be flagged up on their system, and they will be more interested if you get pulled again.
Everyone I know has only ever got a £30 fine and no points for incorrectly displaying their plates. I got off with being told to change them.
