remember that scene in fawlty towers? Right I've just about had enough of you...... And he beats the car with a stick.
I'm there right now.
My car been playing up a bit recently, been to VW about it, EPC light check engine light coming on like a fruit machine. Cut a long story short, after pissing about for ages at VW, even got the guy who wrote the software for the ECU confused in itally and germany. No one can work out why my car has PMT. The have suggest that I should ignore the light and all is well.
I have been round other places and experts and determined that the MAP sensor could be screwed, but it wasn't that.
I have been in touch with the engine diagnostics doctor from car mechanics magazine, he said polo is it? There is a known problem of the throttle body fouling and causing problems with idle. I need to clean all the s**t off and re-adapt the ECU. and it will be dandy?
So I order the gaskets, will do this job at the weekend. But Have to go to Bristol for my job, so I drive it carefully to bristol. Stop at services, will not start. Its got a vapour locking problem. eventually start carry on. Worried now.
Bristol is as Bristol does, a grid locked pain, and coming out, I was going down all sorts of back roads, using my trusty tom-tom mobile.
On the motorway, total flame out, all the lights on the dash come on, revs from to 0, speedo goes as well. Car slows from 80 down to about 75MPH, then all lights go out except check engine and now the cruise comes back to 80 up to 90......
The engine stopped firing for about 5 seconds, seems like total electronics failure and ECU reboot. It is odd that the tacho should drop to 0 because its driven from the ECU, would still read if the engine had a n electrical or fuel fault.
I checked out the window, there were no UFO's in the vacinity, and my watch is correct, so I can rule out alien abduction for now, either that or the aliens are smart enough to set watches now.
Car drove like a babe the rest of the way.
Despite Check engine > there are no fault codes stored! Do you think my car has gone senile?
Now I am angry.......

Well it did occur to me that the ECU main connector could be insecure or subject to corrosion or poor earthing. I have seen some cars where the drain behind the windscreen gets blocked with leaves, and the chamber fills up. The result is the ECU is under 4 inch of water, which will cause problems sooner or later. I will check for this.
