Strange electrical problem

Post by loud »

OK this has recently started happening...on the dash my boot open sign was fading on and off, then totally on then totally off and now it just seems to stay totally on all the time, even though the boot is firmly closed. Also the boot light seems to fade on and off when the boot is open...

also when pressing the button to lock my doors the lights and beep are like 1/4 of the time they used to be, its a really quick flash and beep...

and last but not least my alarm has started going off randomly for no reason on the odd occasion

That sounds like the boot lock has corroded, at least corroded the connections to the boot lock.

This happened to me when I first bought the car, the washer hose leaked water into the inside of the boot door, I had the hose fixed and it was fine for a while. Several weeks later, symptoms similar to yours started to appear and I took it back, they couldn' work out what the problem was, had to take it back about four other times before they finally fixed it and it was only when I mentioned getting out a specialist that they fixed it. During this time they had replaced the boot lock, the lock barrel and cleaned the wiring.

Hope this helps, if it is under warranty get them te dearlership to fix it...

well my washer had disconnected, but it had done so at the join which is inside the rear side panel, like next to the rear seats - so there was no water getting as far as the boot lock. I will check this out though as it sounds very similar to my problem, thanks for the replies!

yup your rear window washer cable has no doubt split, causing moisture to form around the boot lock sensor, happened to me, nothing to worry about and is fine when the weather is dry

well i guess it must be a connection problem as i went to open my boot today for the first time in AGES and it doesnt open, so i guess the connections to the boot lock have got screwed up or something...i'll have a proper look when i get the chance

that is worrying because its vacuum?

I had to replace the switch in the bootlid. Cost about 2 quid from VW. Put lots of grease on it to keep it dry in the future.

Your alarm probably uses the boot open detect switch to detect entry to the car. So its probably the same problem.
