does anyone know whether the little pipe on the manifold cover should be pushed right in or have a little gap?

All that is a warm air feed. To help the car warm up on cold days. Most people take them off.

Yep I took mine off on me old mk4, whin I fitted a induction kit.......

Car warms fine with out it, if left on it channels some air there, would be better for all air channeled to throttle body...
