Faulty temperature sensor

Post by Mabbi »

Hi
Does anyone know the VW part number for the coolant temperature sensor on a Polo 6n 1.6i.

The temperature gauge hasn't worked since I bought the car a month a go.

I've traced the problem to the temperature sensor as when you earth the yelllow/red wire in the temp sensor plug, the gauge moves when you turn the ignition.

I've heard faulty temp sensors are a common problem, anyone else replaced their's? and how easy a job is it for a relatively inexperienced DIY'er.

I changed mine about two months ago, was pretty easy, i'll talk you through it in a minute but first here's the part numbers but bear in mind I have a 1.4 MPI 6N, so I dunno if your part will be identical?

Coolant Temp Sensor 6U0919501B £22.37
0-Ring (rubber seal you need) N90316802 £0.81

Anyway, before you do the job go and buy a Haynes manual, it will save you time in the future and saved me from f*****g my engine many times.

1) The first thing I did was drain my coolant - it was old anyway. Haynes recommend you do this by disconnecting the lower radiator hose but i'm retarded and instead just ripped out the old coolant temp sensor and collected the coolant undernieth in an old plastic sledge!

2) Flush cooling system with some cold water.

3) Fit new coolant temp sensor and o-ring rubber seal.

4) Make sure you have refitted the RETAINING CLIP correctly. I f****d this up first time round causing my new temp sensor to come loose spraying hot coolant EVERYWHERE while driving at 60mph (my engine survived luckily).

5) Re-fill coolant system with correct quantities of coolant/water.

6) Let engine idle for 15 minutes to check sensor is working and there are no leaks.

If thats too vague, you cant afford a Haynes manual or you distrust my instructions, i'll scan the relevant Haynes manual pages on how to change the temp sensor. Just give me a PM.

Good luck!
