Should I fit my B&M or sell it?!

Post by Si_GTi »

Last year I bought a B&M short-shifter as part of the JBS Group Buy, but I haven't been able to fit it yet due to restrictions out in place by my insurers.

The reason for this post is that I am in two minds on whether or not I should wait a bit longer (until June) and fit it, or sell it off and recoup some of the money I paid for it last year?

Those of you who took part in the GB and actually fitted your kits, how do you find it? How much of an improvement is it over standard?

Any thoughts on the matter are welcome :)

Cheers

Fit it mate. I did mine by myself and it was really simple. Maybe get someone to give you a hand as you always forget how something fitted. Took me about 1hour max.

As for what its done to my driving pleasure.....this is all i can say. It feels way sportier, gear changes are way quicker, and best of all, i've found that the selection of gears is better. Admitedly its a little stiffer than standard but the pro's for fitting it against not fitting it are exceptional.

If you're worried about fitting it now and having a crash causing your insurance to be invalid, wait! If not get it fitted asap.

Fit it! It's a great improvement and you'll only lose money on it if you sell it...

I don't think you'll find anyone with one who thinks its crap.

Personally I'd have fitted it long ago, and if questioned deny all knowledge of it not being standard... it is a GTi after all, and meant to be sporty?

[Whoever ends up with my car will be getting my short shifter free, along with the custom code chip and H&R Springs,as I'm too lazy to take them off]

How come you want to wait til June for the B&M but you're getting an exhaust sooner? Or did I miss something?

Don't worry, you haven't missed anything!

My insurers told me, "no modifications to the engine, suspension, gearbox or wheels". Besides, the Powerflow system is being built to the same spec as the standard OE exhaust, the advantage of having a Powerflow is that it has a lifetime gaurantee (sp), thats why I'm having it!

As for the B&M, well I could fit it ASAP but as soon as somone drives the car they will know that something is different. If you have to have your car repaired by your insurers after a bump, the approved bodyshop picks the car up, whisks it away and takes a stack of photos of the car and writes a report before the insurers assess the damage and read said report, then make their decision on whether or not it is worth their money putting the vehicle back on the road. You can't miss a short-shifter, you can overlook a slightly shinier looking standard spec exhaust...

There is probably a 90% percent chance that I will have the shifter fitted, and I don't mind paying JBS £80 to sort it for me, just sometimes I think that maybe it would be better off actually fitted to a car rather than gathering dust under my bed!

 personally, i couldn't imagine the approved garage noticing that the shifter throw is shorter. Can't imagine they have driven a GTi before, and would be like.....oh no, they have quite obviously fitted a short shifter.

I understand you are a bit wary about invalidating your insurance as companies are always gonna find ways out of paying. However, the way i look at it is, "ahhh the shifter is in the middle of the car, not much chance of that getttin damaged. They won't notice it"

Up to you though at the end of the day. But its definately worth fitting! 8)

Fit it...

It will make you wonder why you waited this long...

If you this the Gti is a sports car....fit this baby and then call VW to let them know what was one of their biggest mistakes on the Gti.

Simply amazing shift feel...

Installs quick too !!

1 million dollars and three hawaiian islands! The good ones though, not the scrappy little ones...

YES, I will fit it, thanks for all your comments - looks like I am definitely missing out, but I'd rather wait until June just in case. Although... I might call my insurers anyway and see if they've changed their mind :)

Reeyad: give JBS in Chesterfield a ring. They'll be able to get one and can perform the neccessary little mod for to work for the polo gti.

I believe its the same one the corrado uses, but has a small hole drilled in it for a little pin to poke through. Stops something but cant remember what!
