Polo GTi - a few problems

Post by Ant_43 »

Hi all, i'm new here. Had my 2001 gti for a couple of months now, seems almost everything i've read on here that can go wrong with the polos, has on mine!
Got the pedal box recall done on it a week ago, surprisingly for free, was expecting a £700 bill, £72/h labour at VW makes me sick! But all good so far, actually seemed a little smoother.
Since i got it i've had problems with my coolant gauge playing up. It suddenly plummets to the bottom most times i drive, then returns to the normal 90 a few minutes later. The garage couldn't find the fault when they had it so gave it back without doing alot. Seemed to work at first but then the gremlin came back. I've read here that it could be the sender/sensor unit needs replacing. I hope that fixes it cos its really really annoying!
I've had the rear washer pipe split problem, together with the alarm going off at 3 in the morning!, due to the water reaching the boot sensor/lock area. Disconnecting has fixed the problem temporarily tho.

Then today, during a short spin on dual carriageway, the exhaust emissions (check) light comes up on the dashboard, and goes away when i slow down to 60ish?

Do any other gti's seem to run a bit unsmoothly and jerky as mine seems?Does every polo have these problems!

P.S Sorry for the massively long essay above

I've been really pleased with the drive and reliability with mine (had it 15 months).

Had the rear washer problem, but that was due to me not putting de-icer in my resevoir and trying to use it in icey conditions. Pressure forced the hose off the jet.

What's the mileage on yours?

mileage is around 55000, trouble is you don't know how it was driven by the previous owner. but had the cam belt changed a bit early for piece of mind!

I've had the rear washer problem.

I've also had the temperature sensor problem. I replaced mine with a new one. Seems to have cured it.

My car is jerky as well, as is probably everyone elses on here (common problem).

i think most the problems you have encountered, 99% of the polo gti owners have atleast had the pleasure of comming accross atleast one of them if not all!

I had a few little problems in the first month of owning it, but nothing that wasnt sorted easy. The coolant light came on for me, but it was the cooling fan that needed replacing. ECU light came on, so i cleaned throttle bodies, sorted it...

No other problems touch wood :)

Is that the area under the air filter? how did you clean them? did you use solvents or anything or just a rag?
