Okay i got a P reg Polo 1.4 (not a very large engine i know) but it seems gutless.. when you put your foot down its like slowly speeds up and you have a mild judder whilst it does this once your at speed its fine.. if your on a motorway it does 80-90mph without a problem its just slow speeds like 20-40mph tried slick50 petrol treatment and that kinda made a bit of a difference but not much..
Any suggestions..??
Gutless Performance?

hmm, you are dropping the gears properly to keep the revs up, i'm assuming... and aren't in an automatic with some kind of shift pattern malfunction
the juddering is the funny thing here. perhaps it's "lost" a cylinder, which will certainly impact the performance. if you don't want to start playing with all sorts of bits you may be as well to take it to a garage and explain the situation, have them test it out, give you a base to work from in the future if it returns also.
things that could cause it... (assuming it is a single or even 2-cylinder misfire)
duff spark plug/s
misbehaving fuel injector/s (1.4 is MPI, i think)
perished ignition leads
distributor cap and/or rotor need replacement
main ignition module worn out
general internal engine knackerage (compression loss from burnt piston rings / perforated head gasket, valve problems, etc)
don't put too much faith in all the additives, mainly they're either for aiding and prolonging the health of a good engine (slick 50, redex etc), or last-gasp measures to mask a bad'uns death rattles (mass amounts of STP replacing the oil)
also the performance may just depend on your frame of reference. even after a year the 70hp astra (less powerful on paper than your 1.4, i think?) i'm now driving seems massively quick, after 3 years of owning a 45hp polo.... but there's people who wouldn't touch the 'tray with a bargepole because it's "too slow"
(fast enough to scare the daylights out of anyone in the passenger seat should i be pushed into the role of express taxi, i'll tell ya)
