Changing my fuel tank

Post by Mk2Adam »

i've painted my new tank today and i'm planning on fitting it tomorrow as long as it's not bucketting down...

is there anything i'll need or any advice that might come in handy? i've gotta go pick up a new seal for the fuel level sender, and i'm aware that i'll possibly have to bend the arch. but anything else?

bare in mind that i'm basically a novice with this kind of stuff and i've never done anything to do with the fuel before :)

I put one into my Mk1...very simple, especially for someone with 2 left hands!

Take the opportunity to clean out above the tank and get as much Waxoyl as you can below the rear seat and over the top of the tank...I presume you've given the tank a couple of coats of paint?

Mine pretty much went straight in, without having to bend the sill. Once in, plenty of Waxoyl around the filler neck!

Good luck

watch out if it's non genuine as I bought what I thought was genuine until it arrived with made in taiwan on it! By that stage I'd no choice but to get it fitted as it was up for MoT. A local mechanic fitted it for me and the pipe is way off,he didn't wanna try and straighten it incase it broke.

Good point Jim!

Mine was a VAG tank, cost about twice what a Euro Car parts tank did...I bought the ECP tank and when I dropped the old tank out, the filler neck was a different angle! Either much bending of the sill...or much bending of the filler neck  Needless to say it went straight back

The VAG tank just slipped straight in...

It was a guy my bro knew who said the one I was getting was genuine so I went for it and when I realised it wasn't it was too late as it had to be fitted asap!!
