Redline

Post by andyg »

Hi guys,

On the way home from work I got a bit carried away with some quick starts off the lights and hit just under the redline in second. Now on the GTi the redline doesnt start till 7k. I have a three part question:

1.) Is it safe to rev the engine to say 6900? I know max bhp is at 6250 but its sometimes easy to got past that if ur setting off quick.

2.) I don't think I hit the limiter, if I did it must have been at the exact point I depressed the clutch for 3rd. What revs does the limiter kick in and is it a limiter that stops the spark or stops the fuel?

3.) Does the ECU hold information about your driving in its memory, like does it give a code if you hit the limiter so the stealers know if u have been ragging it.

Gti sounds sweet at 5500rpm when the VVT is doing its thing.

I've gone up to the redline plenty of times since having it, although I don't always do it.

I've only ever hit the limiter once, although it's not something I plan on doing again.

And yes, it does sound sweet 8)

1st = 40 mph
2nd = 60 mph
3rd = 90 mph
4th = 110 mph
5 = ? No doubt others will though

The rev limiter kicks in at 7k, the Polo gots a soft limiter which it hits first. As the throttle is fly by wire it basically just cuts the accelerator pedal so the car won't rev anymore, it doesn't stop the fuel or spark just won't rev any higher, so you get a gentle stop in the revs. However there is a hard limiter which cuts in if the car revs past the soft limiter don't know if cuts the spark or fuel though. This would come into effect if for example if you put it into 1st at 70 or accelerating hard down a hill the momentum could push the car past 7k

Theres no harm in reving the Polo to the redline aslong as the engine oil is warmed up.

My old mk5 polo 1.4 75bhp had a limiter where if you hit it the car just died for a few seconds.

Its cool to know it has a different/better limiter, because all the Gtis power is high in the rev range changing gear at 6k is gonna give you better accelleration, but its also pretty close to the redline so its not hard to hit it now and then.

ive managed to hit mine a few times, mine seems to come in at 6750rpm (or thereabouts), just kills the engine for a second or so, and then suddenly u get power back and your back in action. .

not too good for trying to beat someone away from the lights as when u hit it, you just roll down the road and lose all power hahah :twisted:

I've hit the limiter once, I usually manage to change just before 7k which is about the red.

mm: when you hit it did your car die or did the engine sound like it was bouncing off its limiter?

Correction to my initial post, I said max power was @ 6250, its actually at 6500.

Seems stupid having the max power output 250rpm off the limiter, usually they give 750 - 1000.

What kind of mileage should be reached before the engine can be considered run in? as i dont want to start thrashing mine untill it has run in properly... its currently on 8,500miles and since ive had it (7,800) hasnt been above 4.5k revs..... how boring

Well i would say ive hit it about 20 times or so

hahahahah

mainly because ill hold a gear out on a corner to keep it at optimal for when i come out of the bend, rather than changing and having poo power upon exit.

its all fun and games though, the way i see it is, its there for a reason to stop you breaking your car, so who cares if you do hit it a few times eh ?

Also Jezmk4 if you read carefully, youll notice people talking about the rev limiter, not asking if it exists, so NO we havent JUST found the revlimiter.

And no we dont ALL drive like nancys . . .although im sure some people do *AHEM* haha

Hmmm the only thing ive ever worried about is not pointlessl;y ragging it from cold, doesnt do any engine any good. . .but other than that. . vw engines like being revved. . in my opinion anyway heh :D

i started 'ragging' mine from 24k onwards and its still running as good as it did then (engine wise) and im no on 50k.

Gti's are ment to be driven though, i dont see the point in buying one if your not going to !!!. . .if you just 'cruise' in a GTI then basically all you are is a poser. . .you just want the 'image' associated with a Gti. . might as well have bought 1.2 and done that up really.
