Corvette Z06 - America's world-beater

Post by mysteryboy »

Normally American sports cars are a bit of a motoring joke, and you certainly wouldn't expect one to be challenging the big Italian marques as one of the fastest road cars around.

That's exactly what Chevrolet are doing with the Corvette Z06 though - and it looks like they might just succeed.

The Z06 packs an awesome punch which sees it vying with the likes of the Pagani Zonda and Lamborghini's Murcielago for the title of world's fastest production car.

Under the bonnet there's a 7l V8, pumping out 505bhp which will propel it to 62mph in just 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed of almost 200mph.

The secret to this stunning performance is the car's feather-light weight of just 1,418kg, made possible by the use of carbon fibre and balsa wood in the construction.

We're not so sure travelling at 200mph in a car made of balsa wood is the most appealing of ideas, but with all this performance at under £60,000, who are we to argue?

Not too bad for the money...

Unless it's different to any other American car, it's all well and good until you reach something called a corner!

Still, for 60k it's not bad at all.

Top Gear had the standard Z06 Corvette and by all acounts it cornered (or rather power-slid) round their test track really rather well for an American car, although as is typical of TG lately most of the driving was either up and down the runway or sideways into corners with lots of gas and lots of tyre smoke :)

Too bad it still looks like a 1980s supercar wannabe.

Yup, a supercar with all the class and subtlety of a 6-pack of Budweiser and a pickup-truck with a gun rack.

It might be quick, but for £60k there's an awful lot of other cars I'd choose first.
