Cleaning & Protecting Coilovers

Right got a set of coilovers in the garage.

What do i use to clean them up?

What do i use to protect them?

Any tips on cleaning them up?

Any tips on protecting them? :)

protecting them i have been told to use motorcycle inner tubes like a giant condom over the springs secured with zip ties.

clean them i woudl assume WD40 and a wire brush will be good enough.
