Hello mate!

If ure looking for the gearbox code you will find it very hard to decipher>

1. open the bonnet
2. just to the right of your plastic cover over the engine look down to the right though the large gap
3. you will see the top of the gearbox and where it attaches to the engine
4. the code is puched as a series of dots across the top of the housing just near the top of this unit. You will need a high powered tiny torch and perhaps some de-greaser/ cleaner to clear off the surface.
5. alternative would be to do a rubbing like you did as a kid (pencil onto paper sitting on the top.
6. there is a code listed in your owners handbook which is supposed to correspond with the gearbox code. This appears usually as a build sticker in the fron of the owner manual/handbook.

Best of luck! let me know how you get on> I had the same issue trying to locate this, as my gearbox had been incorrectly changed by a previous owner and have now got a new gti gearbox in WOW what a difference... you feel like you have a new car! with twice the power.... OOOppps there goes one of those speed camera's (are they supposed to flash when u go past??)

Hi mate and cheers for the reply - you've kinda had what I think maybe my problem.

I've had a replacement gearbox and it don't feel right - i'm having to rev higher 5000rpm returns 95mph in 5th. My real question was is it possible to fit the wrong gearbox. So I spoke with my local VW garage about this and all they could say was if I could give them my original gearbox code (that's long gone) and the new one they could tell me - so i figured that the gearbox code contains ratio info or something similar to enable them to get the ratio info. So I was thinking if I could get a correct GTi gearbox code then that would be a start.

I'll look in my service book for the correct code as you suggest though and let you know.

Cheers again.

At 4K mines goin at approx 85-87mph. in 5th.

At 6400 in 4th you are talking 110 mph ish.

I think 2nd gear 6500 is about 60mph.

Take it out for a spin, see what revs you do in those gears and the speeds, that will also tell you if you have the right box :)

btw don't go over 70mph mkay

4k in 5th in mine is about 84mph on the speedo, I think at 5k is a little over 105 so it does sounds the ratios are different, could be down to the speedos reading different I know 80 on my speedo is 77 on GPS. Not my gps unit so I have never checked it at 4k. Suppose there could be varations on the rev counter aswell.

thanks for all the help

6400 in 4th was 98mph.

I found the gearbox code is ETG (it's to the right of the engine code - AVY on the sticker) - i'll speak with the vw dealership on monday and see what they say.

All back from the fixers - ratios sorted / they sorted the clutch as well after the one they put in had a defective thrust bearing. This was done at Mr Clutch and I must admit I had heard some mixed reports about them but I have to say they were top bannana in getting it sorted under the warranty and even cleaned the car.

Very happy indeed.

Cheers again for all the help
