I purchased a VW Polo GTI, around a week ago, whilst driving the car home, i began to notice that the gear box was rather notchy, and I was having trouble selecting gears 1, 3 and 4.
I also noticed a strange 'whining noise' which would appear when i accelerated, but disapear when I slowed down, and this noise sounded like it was coming from underneath the car.
After stopping at a set of traffic lights, I struggled to get the car into gear and pulled away from the traffic lights, and then all of a sudden I heared a loud 'bang' which came from the gear box, and my vehicle then came to a sudden halt. I immediately called the RAC who diagnosed the problem as a faulty gearbox.
I was just wondering if this is a common problem on VW Polo GTI's and if any of you have experienced this same problem?
I would also like to note that this vehicle was fitted with a new pedal box, a new gear box, and a new clutch about 4,000 miles ago.

The Polo gearbox is not the best VAG gearbox, it worries me a little the amount of posts on here where GTI owners have either bought a car with a new gearbox or requiring a new gearbox as its failed. They are hard to come by 2nd hand due to the low number of Polo GTIs and 5 speed Lupo GTIs.
