MkIII Thermostat

My temperature guage sits permamnently at about 70 when the engine is warmed up, is this normal. I understand the thermostat should start to open about 83 and be fully open at 113.

Is the temp normal, is there something wrong, I thought normal guage temp was around 90. Do I need to replasce my thermostat or is some thing else wrong ?

Possibly, or your temperature sendor is knackered. Best to replace both and you know it's right.

yeah, and get on it quick. I drove round like this for best part of two years thinking "this car's really great, it's always so cool, it'll never overheat" til I found out overcooling WASNT a good thing and was probably causing engine damage.

my thermostat was all gunked to hell

but I changed the temp sensor as well just in case (because that was gunky too). You may as well do the coolant at the same time as it may well have sludgy contaminants in it now from that effect, and you'll have to drain some of it off to avoid a massive mess when swapping components anyhow.

i think i got mine from GSF...?
probably cheaper, quality should be similar.

No, GSF ones are not as good quality. They work at a different temperature to the genuine ones, not something I recommend.

would the senders be similar? i got one at the weekend and my polo now seems to be running at about 100 but not sure if thats just the gauge thats off. would it matter if it was when i know the normal running temp of the car?

Whoops.... well, too late now

it seems to work. How long for will be a matter for the historians.
(did seem to lose some coolant the one time i gave it a purposeful engine heating test?)

How much does this cost to replace.

If the fan does not coem on after a 15 in drive would I be looking at major problems?

And can I change this myself or do I need a mechanic?

To test if its the sender put on of the wires onto an earthing point. If the ignition is on the gauge should go all the way up if the sender works.

If not then its the gauge

get the fan sensor, and it should have one plug with two wires, get a wire and give the sensor 12v power, if the fan moves its the fan sensor thats broken, should be cheap to replace, if not hten the fan is blown and you need a new one
