Hey all, just created my profile, how do i get a picture of my car up with my name? ive tried going to profile but cant find the option anywhere. Also, ive got some 195/45/15 OZ racing super turismo's fitted and some 60mm adjustable koni shocks and springs coming, just need to know if they rub or not and how easy are they to fit? do you need spring copressers to get them into the wishbones? thanks all, brew.

welcome mate, to host a pic go to something like http://imageshack.us/

brief howto on changing shocks and springs.
tools needed
WD40 big tin 500ml ( or simmilar penetrating fluid locktite freeze spray is good aswell i have been told or plus gas
allen key 5mm i think
offset ring spanner 17mm
offset ring spanner 20 or 21mm
19mm socket
19mm ring spanner
tourque wrench
axel stands
jack
spring compressors
stick the car up on the stands and remove wheels
spray WD40 around the 2 lower strut bolts ( dont worry about getting it on the disks as its non lubricating (soak the bolts. )
now working from the top remove the strut caps. undo the top nut while holding the strut still with the 5mm allen key ( you will see what i mean) when thats free procede to removing the lower strut bolts and removing the shock. ( support the hub on a jack or bricks or something as not to damage the brushes. ) repeat for the other side.
now you have both shocks off compress the springs and remove the rubber brushings (the black things on the tops and swap them onto the new struts remembering the bolt sequance. put the top in first using a new lock nut tighten loosley.
secure the bottom of the strut to the hub and tourqure to 90nm (after setting the camber if you havent got a camber guage dont worry you can set it useing a spirit level or take it to a garrage) drop the car on teh ground and tourque the top strut nut up and check them both

if it looks like that you have forgottern to put the brusings in or not put them in properly dont shut the bonnet.
the rear one is easyer
jack rear onto stands remove wheels and soak bottom nuts in wd40 again
open boot and remove parcel shelf fold seats down and remove the parcel self holders.
fold carpet down and undo the strut tops you will ned a small spanner or an ajustable to hold the strus still and its a 17mm spanner for the larger bolts. do both sides and the struts will drop out giving you clearance to remove the bottom bolts without the exhaust being in the way. remove the rubbers and refit to new shocks and fit as you took them apart.

i got them for £10 from my local motorfactors (shirley auto spares)
there about £15 in halfords or £25 for the fancy ones.
its really easy to DIY then all you pay for is camber/tracking ajustment.
like i said camber can be done with a spirit level all you do is put the level against the brake disk if thats perfectly vertical the camber is set at 0 where its supposed to be.

car looks nice mate get some clear indicators and side repeaters and your car will look better, then deck it , i also think your car would look good with the red mk5 rear lights. should be a tidy motor when you've lowered it.
sorry quick question for warrmr do you need the spring tensioners when replacing the springs and shcoks or just if your doing springs,
cos im getting a g-max spring and shock kit and was gonna diy it on myself, also how do you adjust camber and tracking.
cheers Ant

if your changing springs you will most deffinitly need a set of spring compressors.
basicly the spring is bolted to the shock under tention ( to stop the spring jumping around when the suspention is at full travel. ) so you need to loosesn the tention by compressing the spring to remove the brushings slide the spring off compress the new one and refit brushings.
if you try to remove the brushings without compressing the spring the assembly will explode. ( think of a biro the spring on the end if you compress it and let go it will fly across the room) do that wiht a spring and shock assembly and well you will fly across the room.

vag parts will be able to sort you out at the bottom of the main page beneath the for sale bit near the group buys, or check on ebay. they are just mk5 lights fitted to the mk4
check that for info on how to fit.
thats a pic of my car with them on, i'll try and find a red car with them.
so shoudl i just buy the compressors anyway im fitting springs and shocks can i not take out the old units and fit the new?
cheers Ant

no cos you need to swap the brushes from teh car over to the shocks. unless your buying new brushes then you could prolly get away with it. or at least i did on my coilovers as i could just wind them down to take tention off the spring.Ant_6n wrote:vag parts will be able to sort you out at the bottom of the main page beneath the for sale bit near the group buys, or check on ebay. they are just mk5 lights fitted to the mk4 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v134/ ... 010463.jpg
