anyone do martial arts?

Post by Mk2Adam »

i've started watching Ultimate fighting on tv last few months, and have decided to start doing a martial art for fitness and a bit of stress relief (plus i can defend my polo  )

i wanted something with a bit of everything really, striking and groundwork etc but nothing poncy with chi and wax on wax off, so after talking to various people i think i've decided on jiu jitsu and then if i like it possibly doing others like kickboxing and maybe brazilian jiu jitsu.

basically does anyone here do any martial arts and have any opinions, tips or advice? :D

(or if nothing else maybe turn it into a thread about UFC? lol)

There r loads of variations in each martial art Adam. I do karate, have done on & off for years & currently got a 2nd dan. But even in karate there r associations that concentrate more on fighting & others that are more about basics eg stances ect.

I dnt no much about jiu jitso but personally i wouldnt go for kickboxing, ive tried it & felt it was really 1 dimensional & from what u r saying your looking for something with more variety?

You could always try a variety of diff martial arts? I was talking to a guy the other day who trains in karate, boxing and judo (hardcore!)

cool, weren't really expecting a reply lol, something about the polo scene that didn't really scream "beats people up in their spare time"

i'm pretty sure i'm doing the jiu jitsu as it has alot of vairety, e.g basic striking, takedowns, submissions etc but thought about maybe doing another one as you said to give me a more rounded experience :)

cheers for the advice robz

Ive started many different forms of martial arts until i found one that suited me and what i was after - i settled for white crane kung-fu
( i know its not what your after all the spirtual stuff but thats what i was after !!! ) i aslo take tai-chi classes as this is also in itself a martial art but more an "internal" defensive one !!

But the others i tried were Judo - a good one for grappling holds and throws (useful for ufc !) i also tried kickboxiing but like robz :-

i agree i wasnt impressed at all - i would have preferred Muay Thai

the other i tried was korean karate which has an almost "street fighting" feel to it with very agressive stances and attacks !!

im on the look out for a capoeria school/class/lesson - i would love to learn that !!

sorry about the essay but i love my martial arts !!

Im considering taking up judo, jst to get the basics of thorws ect, ive learned some thru karate but a few extra tricks up my sleeve could always be helpful 8)

Had my first Jiu Jitsu class tonight, was pretty cool actually, spent the 1st 10 mins learning how to fall over

then did some basic self defense kindof things with throws, kindof tough when i'm nearly 9 stone and the 2 guys i was training with are bout about 15-20 stone  bit harder for me to do throws on them than the other way round i suspect.

anyway, i made it through without injuring myself so i'm happy 8)

p.s and i learnet a few cool holds to do on my brother next time he pisses me off  e.g patella grip

Hi, Iv been studing Lau Gar Kung fu Since i was 5(im now 20) Im not quite on black yet, as i had a back injury in my early teens where i could train as much. I found that at the start it was boring, but that was only to ensure you had the basics correct. From there it was all good, iv learnt to keep aviod conflict(fights). Since i started, iv never had to use it. But iv done local, national, Euopean Tournaments. Its good. Keeps you fit.

Jiu Jitsu is good from what iv heard, iv looked at little bits, so i can understand how certain manouvers work in kung fu. It works.

All i can say, is stick with it. As you'll never know when you'll need it. 8)

just a lil update guys :D ...

i've had my 4th jujitsu lesson this evening and can't really speak highly enough of it, great fun, suits the fact that i'm pretty small and not massivly strong, i've finished the white belt but just gotta wait till end of july to do my official grading. really impressed me with the range of things we've done so far, e.g done all the basic throws, holds etc, then we had a lesson of hardcore striking, just like kickboxing and then today we even did a bit of nunchucks lol.

Exactly what i wanted in a martial art so thanks to anyone that helped me with my decision to choose jujitsu
