14x6J Gti steels on a MKII Polo Derby?

I'm planning on fitting a set of Golf GTi steels (the MKII versions) to my '82 polo. Painted satin black with no centre caps

The polo is lowered 70mm at the moment, it may yet go lower!

The only suitable tyre size I can find is 185/55/14 - any idea if i will get problems?

I don't care how bad the ride quality is, I'm just bothered about rubbing.

Can you modify the inner arches in anyway?

i don't think the derby has too many restrictions as far as i know, i've just put 185/60/r13's on my hatchback which has 1 of the most restricted arches in the business, probably best to wait and hope someone like gareth_gt_hatch sees this as he's got ATS cups on his mk2 saloon, so i'm assuming he's got that sortof size wheel and tyre arangment

i have seen alot of slammed mk2 saloons but they've normally got 13's on so maybe safer to go for 13's, maybe able to squeeze out an extra few mm of lowerage too

He's running 165/55's I think I'm not sure hoe similar the offset is on the gti steels.

I think i might go for 165/60's - they are cheap and should fit ok.

yeah, i take it you want 185/55 to maintain the correct rolling radius? You might have problems with tyres that big and major lowerage. 165/60 is a safer bet but what I use would be better still. Ive got no problems with scrubbage, although Im only lowered about 60/50

the ATS cups are et33, so stick out a bit more than the steelies would. They sit really far in at the back, but sit perfectly at the front. heres a pic my mate took of it at all types

I'm going to go for 165's - I don't want the steering to be too heavy either.

Hopefully I won't have any clearance issues!

Is it possible to go lower than 70mm?

fk sell an 80/60 kit I think. Otherwise its coilovers and ££££.

if you run icle wheels with icle tyres 70mm is your limit. Im 80 mm and it hurts

just thought i'd point put that i'm running 185 tyres on my mk2 hatch and the steering hasn't changed at all as far as heavyness goes. bit shocked when i tried dry steering for the 1st time and had no problems

although doesn't help you with the clearence though

Weitec do a 80/60 kit too which is fully adjustable (damping) and rear adjustable (height) I have one but not fitted yet.
