Asked a mechanic i know, he is 90% sure that mk4 polo's were all EFI however the single point injection system looked very much like a carb, basically just a high pressure fuel pump and some ECU software.
The multipoints you can definately tell, i think they made the change to multipoint around 1998/99.
One way of telling is when you fire up you car in the winter do you have to put gas on to get it running, or does the car automatically adjust its revs itself? If it does then its EFI as even with automatic carbs you have to down the pedal the fully open the choke before starting the car ( i remember that from my mk2 Polo)

Changing cams and a remap is very expensive and the pound/BHP ratio is crap on a small capacity engine. I dont even think anywhere does a propper remap for a polo do they? Its all solder on chips.The_phat_controlleruk wrote:How about changing the camshaft (fast road) and getting the ECU re-mapped. That'll help.
Remap would probably get you around 8bhp
iv got a 1.4 8v mk 5, n iv decided not 2 bother with performance n wait till i can get something thats a bit quick 2 start with if u get me. iv got a custom induction kit n am in the process of spraying an engine cover 2 smarten it up a bit uder there but i think thats all im going to bother with engine wise!
Officially there is no difference, but i had a multipoint 1.4 ibiza and now have a single point 1.4 polo and i would swear that the ibiza was a little nippyer (sp). All VAGs seem to put out a little more than the book figs suggest. I had a standard 2.0litre GTI 8v and that put out 8bhp more than book.
