Any Advice.....What next????

Post by andyd »

Hi all - my first post on here!

Bought a MkV 5 door 1.4 (75bhp) Polo about 2 years ago. I wanted something that was safe, economical, reliable, looked good etc etc. as i used to commute to work.

I really enjoy owning and driving the car - however, I no longer need to commute to work as i have a job much closer to home. I'm toying with the idea at the moment of getting something with a bit more....va va voom! But I think I'd like to keep with the Polo (particularly the MkV).

I'm really open to any advice, anyone may have. Does the 1.4 100bhp noticeably offer that much more that what I've got already?? Am also considering a GTI, but they seem to be so totally rare (and have read the comments on here about clutch problems). The other options I've considered are the 1.4 Sport (100bhp) New Shape....although I think I prefer the look and feel of the MkV....or a Lupo GTI.....although there's the obvious much less space issue. I suppose another option is to keep the VW I have!!

Would I really get that much more of a feel-good factor with a higher spec Polo I suppose is the question I'm asking. Any advice welcome!

Cheers

first, let me say welcome! :D

Secondly, your probably best going to see your local dealer and arranging a couple of test drives, because all the cars you have named have quite different characteristics. another idea would be to speak to the owners of the cars you've mentioned.

Hope that helps

It comes down to how badly you want more power I suppose. In any case, switching cars means taking a bath because of the depreciation... And, at the same time, you had the car for two years so you probably know it pretty well, at least you know how you've driven it eh!

Bring on the "those Dutchies hold on to their cars longer than their kids" jokes...

On the other hand, if you're keen on more power, even tuning that 75hp engine won't exactly do enough.

Are diesel engines an option?

LMAO  very very true Alex

Andy - I would do what Karl mentioned and go test drive some. I doubt you would notice much difference at the bottom end with the 100BHP engine. At the top end though you really would! my Dad's got a MK5 GTi and I have a MK4 1.6 8v. My car "feels" quicker low down whereas his tears your haead off after 5000RPM so it's gonna be down to how u want the power delivery. Personally I like the low down torque of the 8V (A bit like a Diesel really).

I did love it!!!

Only problem - alloy wheel corrosion - made it look just a liiiitttle bit tatty. Dealer said they were going to get them refurbed, so I'm waiting for that.
