Self Service

Post by PeteJ »

right... the time has come to give the polo (1.6 8v) a service!
needs oil/filter
air filter
possibly spark plugs.
so whats the best of each?

i usualy buy cheapo halfords/unipart oil filter

castrol magnatec oil (is there a cheaper alternative of comparable quality?)

what kind of filter element to go for? k&n? green? piper cross?
unsure on this as i've seen/heard all 3 as induction kits but not there panel replacements.. k&n has the most good feedback so.. i dunno about that..

spark plugs i usually get the best bosch i can afford, although after having fun with mismatched plugs in my G60 i probably go for stock ones unless somebody can vouch for some good ones.

now to add to this joy! i have to do all of this to my girlfriends 1.1 peugeot 106, dont think its ever had an air filter at its hitting about 45k now, so about time to change it, i reckon bung a k&n in that aswell.. or a green.. or a piper X... but whatever!

give me your wisdom!

Hi Pete,

Get the VW geniune oil filter! They only costs £3 from the VW dealers. Whats the point for getting those halfords/uniparts one?

i hath run out of stamps :P
no chance in hell i can afford and official service. and i like getting dirty under the car. saves me some wonga, i dont think my cars gonna be worth much when it comes to part with it anyway, its got low miles now and its straight, but its only going to be worth about £1k by the time i sell it on!

anyway, i shall go forth and get some oil today and service the missus' car and get me other bits as and when.

any comments on the panel filters???

you cant warrant paying vw prices for a service,,by the time its had a few youll probably find the cost of them all put togethor is more than what the car is worth. Plus a friend at vw kindly stamps my book for me.
