Here's me believing my father that the strange horrible metal on metal, sandpaper like noise coming when ever i brake is because we've had wet weather..

Then i got back from my 250mile round trip (where the problem occured) and got under the car jacked up..

eeeekk.. needed some new pads me thinks LOL (and some new disks HAHA)

I had to replace both front disks and pads because the pads had warn out on the return journey home.. subsequently i had quite savagely engraved my brake discs : /

blimey thats some worn out pads u got there!! u were lucky to be able to brake at all!!

yeh they barely worked.. but they've always been abit thin since i got the car, so braking was never especially great so i just figured it was wet..

work perfectly now :D

Seen worse.

Pad friction welded to disc was pretty impressive :shock:

Ouch! That's scary.. think I'll go check my brakes tomorrow, that's a bit unnerving :shock:

we'rent you getting the worn pad warning or anything? (if the old cars even had that... i'm sure there's a thing that triggers the warning light when you get metal-metal contact)

it must have been like trying to stop a train!

Haha warning lights for pads on an MK1 :D loving the thought! - no ;)

not really the brakes were actually reasonably good, but are excellent now :)

heh, i don't even know if it exists on modern cars, or whether it was some BS my dad poisoned my brain with when I was younger :) never run a set of pads quite rotten enough to find out!

yer lucky its quite a lightweight ship really, so grinding metal on metal (not the highest friction of all situations) could still bring the whole affair to a halt

Cars with ABS normally have a warning light for pad wear.

If you know what to listen for, you can hear the warning layer built into most pads.

you mean the high pitched squeal my mother swears blind she "can't hear" even when both me AND my technophobe brother are cursing at the noise coming off them? :)
she also can't understand the concept of "short play" and "long play" on our VCR either, bless 'er... going slowly soft in the head from far too much teaching
