increasing top end speed on a mk3 cl coupe
just wondering if theres any ways of doing this besides major engine work? thanks james

AFAIK, the top speed on a Mk3 1.3 is in the region of 95mph, so there's no real point unless you're playing Top Trumps.

That's a load of crap. An ATV 'box will just make things worse - a stock AAV engined 1.3CL reaches its top speed in 4th gear, it just doesn't have the power or torque to manage much in the way of top end acceleration in 5th and the G40 (ATV) 'box has even higher ratios than that.omicron wrote:G40 gearbox.jamesthomas404 wrote:just wondering if theres any ways of doing this besides major engine work? thanks james

You might gain from sticking a GT (AHD) 'box on there as it has lower ratios, but then you may as well have pulled the engine out and stuck a full GT setup in there.

unless you've done major work to the car already or it's totally mint you may be as well to swap the entire thing for a GT - easiest route and not so much more expensive unless you already have the tools / supplies or know someone you can borrow them from easily...
...still, its a larf.
stock gearbox in 1.0 and 1.3 spi cars is pretty much the best set for getting maximum speed out of the car, going by the rev band and all (taking the 8P, it's 4th for the 1.0, and 4th or 5th depending on the situation for 1.3 - as seen in previous RR graphs, the max power band is quite wide, flat, and at "low" revs compared to most). You may eke an extra 1 or 2mph out with the AAV by putting a GT box in (5th becomes precisely set for it, then), but your lower speed cruising will be noisier and less economical - and is it really worth it for the minimal speed increase you'll rarely get to use?
(it may improve your acceleration times a little, but again, with the engine characteristics, you may question the benefit)
the only real way to up your top end speed with these cars is to increase the maximum power output (or find some way to make them more aerodynamic than a brick with a corner chipped off)... smart money's with the GT conversion. it'll feel quite a bit nippier all over
