petrol in oil - damage?? (should have checked ages ago)

Post by Tahrey1043 »

Right, I don't know if I recounted the story of my final contact with Poppy, fixing the ECU problem for my uncle. Probably did.

Anyhow, the upshot of the drama was that the sump (and presumably all the oil passageways) got contaminated with a HUGE amount of unleaded, enough to take me completely by surprise when i tried to drain it out. It's been run at least for a couple of minutes in this state, if not a good mile or two. I did change the oil, but with hands covered in cack and lacking my usual tools i wasn't able to get the filter off.

What might be the consequences of having run it in this state for even a little while? Is it destined to death (about 1000 miles after coming out of it's overhaul running-in period!) or will it be ok now? As the mixture was still distinctly "oily" may it have been sufficient protection for low revs at low temperatures? And what of the filter, will it have purged ok, will it have re-contaminated the oil enough to be a concern --- or will any remainder have been burnt off gradually in the cylinders?

Thanks.... :?

Hi, A few months agomy wife said that her Pug. was not running too well and that the petrol consumption had increased dramatically. I asked her when this had begun, " oh about a month ago" I thought I had better dive straight in and initially could not find any thing amiss. On checking again with the engine running petrol was squirting from the petrol pump and running into the Dipstick hole. I checked the oil levell which was found to be really high. On draining down I found what I estimate to be about an extra 1.5 to 2 pints, obviously the petrol! BIG Panic, In with new oil and a filter ( on removing the oil filler cap the inside appeared new, all the usual sludge, etc. was gone! ), and I started it up. It has now done several hundred miles, including Motorway, since and appears to be completely unaffected, Is this amazing or what. Rolo

phew thats a bit of a relief, thanks :)

still, too worried to check that registration site... it's been to the end of it's tax period since, and though i signed off the V5 i guess the DVLA weren't too on the ball - I got both the acknowledgement and THEN a tax reminder! ... but it's been sold to some polish guy who may not be entirely au fait with the regs or know to check the disc so some officious manc cop might have towed it for crushing now :(
