I know its an oil burner but please help

Post by Green »

I have a 6N mk 4 1.9d polo and it appears that 5th gear has been stripped, all gears are fine to engage without any noise trouble but 5th is not possible without a horrible screeching/metal on metal sound. The clutch needs changed anyway so the box is coming out anyway, I thought of maybe taking the end plate off and checking 5th gear without stripping, is it possible for it to come off the shaft? Whats it held on with, nut or circlip? Ive been told that this model has a dual mass flywheel? AEF engine code. So what I want to know if I do need a replacement box what other boxes can I use, I was wondering if this duel mass flywheel would narrow down the options? Maybe the car doesnt have one?
Sorry to ask but it would be handy to minimise 'off the road' time and get prepared.
Thanks

I've got no specific knowledge on the Mk4s, but fixing gearboxes is best left to the pros. The cheapest way to do it is normally to get a replacement box off a breaker. Diesels tend to have different ratios to petrol cars by quite a way, so you're going to need another Mk4 diesel gearbox, or something that's the same (caddy van, or the equiv skoda or seat may fit).
