so where is this german one I've heard about hiding??
My mate is well up for the challenge!! Looks like we are in for a lot of measuring and head scratching, then some more measuring and a little more head scratching!!
As for the chassis, it looks like a seam-welded engine bay and a full multipoint cage is the solution for strengthening...
A company near me make custom driveshafts so that's them taken care of... just need to see if the engine actually fits in the 'bay!!!
So basically, as for researching the conversion, there is no research!! Damn... a whole lot of stick-it-in-and-see-what's-what!!!

Hi Geezer -
If you're referring to the Mk5 Gti engine, it's a relatively easy conversion. The engine bolts up just like the original lump would. Electronics wise, it's a bit more complicated, as the Mk5 Gti has E-gas. Or, in English, an electronically controlled accelerator pedal. Still, it's all quite doable, no welding, no fabricating of driveshafts (since you use the same gearbox and driveshafts as the Gti has)... etc. Brake upgrade is a must, as Rob has already mentioned.
Now, the G40... Bit lost really. I suspect that the engine will bolt up, but I haven't investigated this conversion at all to be honest... Sorry.
Only seen it three times or so, I'm guessing it's much less popular than the AJV conversion.

don't forget between the head scratching and measuring are the cups of tea! do all engineers do it?dub envy wrote:

i've seen VR6's in a mk4 polo, one in a lupo, putting one into a mk3 is new on me! untouched teritory, step carefully!
like speedlaw says the mk5 GTi engine will bolt right into a mk4 but its drive-by-wire to theres no accelerator cable. i should imagine the pedal box out of the mk5 will simply bolt into the mk4 tho.
G40 is a pretty easy conversion in early mk4's (the ones with SPi engines in) as they are based on the same block. even then the top engine mount has to be fabricated but electrics wise its not too bad. sum1 i know paid about 1700 for the complete conversion.
on later mk4's its a different story, theres a lot more electrics to fiddle with & even more different mounts I'm lead to believe. it has been done in germany tho (see www.g-lader.info).

Robbie:
I've asked on a Dutch Polo forum - the responses were for the most part along the lines of:
"It can't be done."
"He's mad."
"It can't be done."
"Tell him to fit it behind the front seats."
"Handling will be crap."
Repeat that last line 5 times.
No info on the steering rack / subframe issues.
Not giving up yet!
