Do i need a new clutch?

Post by joeallenvwpolo »

Hi, I have a year 2000 vw polo. It has recently had the gear box reconditioned. I have had it back and been using it for the last few days.

I fing it hard to select a gear and sometimes it crunches.
I think it might be the clutch.

When do vw polos need a new clutch?

Is the clutch self adjustable or does it adjust its self?

it definitely sounds like your gear box to me!! easiest way to know if its the clutch is by dring casually along, say 40mph in 4th gear, then put your foot down, if your clutch is on its way you'll most likely get clutch slip where it revs high but the car isn't pulling at that.

Definitely sounds like you've got a duff reconditioned unit. i'm not sure how long the clutch is meant to last tho!

Get the pedal box checked.
This happened to me a few months back, and the pedal box had cracked.
It's a known problem with 6n2's and VW fixed it for free.

does it happen to every 6n2 model, how did you get them to fix it for free?
Having problems with my 6n2 sdi, wondering maybe if it have something to do with the pedal box?

I'm not sure if it happens to EVERY model, but I heard there was a recall for 6n2's because it is very common.
I took my car to VW, and told them my pedal box needs repairing (if you don't tell them it's the pedal box, they will want to charge you £100+ to 'search' for the problem - Mr Clutch verified it was the pedal box for me though for free in 15 seconds).
I asked them to repair it, and they said I'd be notified if they would do it for free - and it was done for free.

I think the pedal box recall only applies to GTI models?

Hey i have recently noticed a similar problem with my gear box wen selecting gears, its as if i have to fight with it sometimes for it to go into gear. I've take it to mr clutch to see what they can make of it, they said the clutch is fine, but it might be something in your pedal box. I've today taken it to vw and they are telling me it has nothing to do with the pedal box but my gearbox might be gone. WHAT A JOKE

I would get a second opinion...
Seeing as it's a common problem with 6N2's and you're having the exact symptons, as well as Mr Clutch saying it's possibly to do with your pedal box, you should take it to another VW garage and see what they say.
Did VW actually have a look at the car, or did they just tell you that from what you told them?

I booked it in from friday, left it since 9am dis morning then about 3:30pm i get a call asking me what is the problem. i was thinking (are they dumb) she goes he's got it on the ramp running an diagnosises or summin before he pulls anything apart, can i explained wat the problem is. So i told her what mr clucth said and wat i thought it was. Then she called back again sayin is it the clutch or the gearbox. I explained again then, then she called back again saying the guy reckons it the gearbox and it would cost serplus. I was like errrm no thanks mate. I reckon they didnt want to do it under the warranty it has and wanted to make some money out of it. :x
