I think there was a German company that did cabrio conversions like that. You see the odd Mk 3 cabrio for sale on mobile.de, pretty rare though. Definately not a factory model.

Treser Cabrio.

You could order the car @ the dealer, they would then ship it to Treser. Treser welds in reinforcements and chops off the roof to leave a roadster. About 300 were produced.

Nice with the roof down, disgusting with the roof up! :shock:

Would be different to have one though I suppose for the rarity value

They still tend to pop up once in a while in Germany, but like you - I'm not exactly convinced of the look of them. They're rare though.
