What's the diff. between these two..?

Post by lyndarthemerciless »

I'm a brand spankin' Newbie so apologies in advance if this is a ridiculous thing to ask...

I'm on the hunt for a MK4 Polo at the minute; the plan is to hold out for one with p/s and airbags, not too fussed about lecky windows and that. Came across these two pics while trawling through some ads and I'm just wondering what the story is with the different steering wheels [both pics are from '99 models.] Am I right in thinking that the 2nd one's different coz it has an airbag..?

Just thinkin' that if I could tell from photos it'd save a load of "Hellooooo, does that car have airbags?" phone calls :D

[Any help appreciated and, again, really sorry if that's the stupidest q. ever but I am v. new to the whole thing - I promise I'll learn as I go along!]

yep the second pic does have an airbag in the steering wheel and also a passenger airbag just above the glove compartment!

the first one looks like an earlier model of the mk4!! i would have thought that when airbags were introduced that they would be in all models in the range!

or maybe airbags were fitted to the higher spec models but its unlike vw to skimp on safety features!

Theyre both late models due to the clocks ;) the L (Top photo) models didnt have leccy windows, airbags or leccy mirrors.

The CL had leccy windows, driver airbag and leccy mirrors.

The top models GLX and 16v (2nd Photo) had both airbags and alloys added to the CL.

There were a few special editions with mix and match trim levels such as the SE, match etc.

airbag was an optional extra on the L model. CL model (and upwards) came standard with a driver's airbag, passenger airbag was optional.

As with all manufacturers towards the end of the run for the models VW will have thrown every spare accessory at the cars in order to get them shifted for the new ones coming. So if your buying a late model its going to have more toys.
