The newer AVY engine conforms to certain emmisions regulations (that came in about May 2000) that the earlier ARC doesn't. I don't think there's any physical differences apart from the mapping of the engine, where the AVY engine has a small dip in power the between 3.5 to 4k odd mark to reduce emissions (as this is the engine speed where the emmisions would be tested).
I think thats all there was, sure someone will confirm anyway !

I'm sure they will both have the same torque dip.. even mk4 polos have that.

I think like the 1.4 16v engine that the older one may only have one lambda probe on the downpipe where as the newer one will have two.. one on the cat also.

if that is the case then you should be able to decat an ARC but not an AVY because the ecu will complain..

may be wrong though.

Couldn't you blank it off if you wanted to decat to stop the ECU having a nightmare?

Dammit having an AVY lol

No because the sensor wouldn't have anything to read so it throws the Check light on, and at worst throws the car into safe mode.

Well, at least thats the case with the Loop GTI.

Its a chip though... isn't it? I understood that JBS couldn't flash the ECU in an ARC engine? :?

yeah it is a chip mate... but cymrupolo said you cant map or chip an ARC engine... you are right it cant be flashed via the dignostics (OBD2??) port.

You can get an 02 cheater tho, it's basicly a resistor in place of the 02 sensor that shows normal readings (as if there was a sensor in place)

Then your light wont come on
