L plates are for people that are still learners and are driving a car with a supervising driver, so i had these for a few times when i went out in my sisters car.
P plates are for people who want to show they're newly passed drivers, and presumably have no confidence in their driving, i never had these as if your passed then your passed, not a legal thing just a preference
I passed on Monday and have no intention of using P plates. I reckon that they would invite idiots to give you a hard time, rather than other peope having patience with you. Also, its a pretty steep penalty if the law catch you learning without 'L's isn't it? On a lighter note, if you are learning, beware of magnetic plates. Firstly, they scatch heck out of the bonnet and secondly, I mst have lost 4 or 5 in the 3 and a half months I was learning.
i had "P" plates for a couple of weeks after i passed!!
first day i passed tho i left a cavalier in my tyre smoke when i got the clutch/accelerator combination slightly wrong!! hehe ask doug all about it!
Only time I had L plates on was when I was driving the instructors car, didn't have P plates though because as Dino sais it gives people a reson to drive closer, pull out infront of you etc.

You can get green L plates as well which show you've just passed
