GTI Intake pipe removal

I've been playing with the pipe over the past couple of days, it certainly sounds gruff, I'm just not convinced that the car picks up from low revs as good as it did.

I'm assuming its down to the fact that the air box is pulling in warm air.

Has anyone removed the stock pipe and replaced it with a more substantial cold air feed?

I don't want to go down the usual BMC route as I think its well over priced, and TBH doesn't sound much different to the standard air box with this pipe removed!

Any ideas?
