Tax & Insurance

OK Guys/Gals,

Need your help:

My wife and I are helping to buy a car for her Dad who lives in the West Indies. We will find a car locally, do the sales bit and her Mum will pay for it, get it shipped down to WI and sign for it when she has arrived in WI as well.
We have found a car at a carsupermarket, but it has no Tax Disc. The car must be registered in my Muminlaws name, but she has no Insurance. The car also must be shipped in December before it gets too old to pass Import restrictions in WI.
Can my wife add the car and her Mum to her Insce so that Mum can buy the Tax Disc??
Is there another way of doing it ???

AFAIK, to tax any car in this country, there has to be a valid insurance certificate for that car.
You cannot add another car to an existing policy, and i belive that now, only the registered owner can tax the car.
I wouldnt think that a british tax disc would be valid in the WI anyhow?
I pressume that you are shipping the car by sea?, so one option, if possible is to trailer the car to the docks, but it would still need to be insured incase of an accident.
I would suggest speaking to the DVLA (be carefull disclosing the exact location of the car if you have it already - make sure you tell them its off the highway), and they may be able to help.
Or speak to the shipping company, as they may have a solution also,

Yeah sorry, the tax is for any trip the car might have to make in the UK, like down to the docks for example, not worried bout the WI.
We are thinking that Mum will have to take out some insurance in her name but we don't need a whole 12 months........

It all seemed so simple, buy a car .................

Speak to your own insurance company. Thinking about it, they may insure an extra car for a couple of days. Sometimes if you have a courtesy car from a dealer, whilst your's is being serviced etc, you have to insure it yourself for that day.
Could be another option?
