i have a polo 1998 1.4 8v and im getting some serious clanking noises,
at first it was the release bearing on the clutch and as i was driving to the garage there was a loun clunk and i was having probs changing gear, i changed the clutch, it drove ok but only when coming off the gas there was a whining noise, but today there was another clunk and now the car sounds like something is gonna drop of! its like a metal against metal clanking noise, it doesnt go when the clutch is dipped, its truggling to go into gear and when i put in in 4th the clanking gets super loud,
ANybody had similar probs, is it defo the gearbox or could it be something else
anyone have a spare gearbox for the apq engine code and is it a cable or rod??
gEARBOX PROBS!!
ive got a similar prob at the moment. i also changed the clutch and thrust beariong thinking it was that. if it has gotten to the stage where you are struggling in and out of gear a bearing within the gear box has probably collapsed and caused serious damage to the box. your best option is to buy a reconditioned box from a transmission specialist. it will be quite pricey, probably around £4oo without fitting, but its much much cheaperthan VW.
